Dr. Vineet Mehan
Founder and Director, Dominion Plastic Surgery
Dr. Vineet Mehan is not just a plastic surgeon—he is the surgical authority that other experts call when no one else can help. As founder of Dominion Plastic Surgery in 2008, Dr. Mehan built what is now recognized as the most advanced and comprehensive plastic surgery practice in the region. With a career spanning over two decades and a case volume that rivals two busy surgeons combined, his level of experience is rare—and unmatched.
Dr. Mehan’s work is widely respected for its complexity, depth, and consistency. He performed the first microsurgical limb salvage surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital, the largest Level I trauma center in Northern Virginia, and subsequently founded the region’s only full-spectrum limb salvage program, offering advanced microvascular reconstruction. His team at Dominion Plastic Surgery now boasts some of the highest microvascular success rates in the country, with low operative times and consistently high limb salvage outcomes. Today, they have performed more microvascular limb reconstructions than any other group in Northern Virginia.
He was also the lead reconstructive surgeon on the elite multidisciplinary team that salvaged the leg of Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith in 2018, after a catastrophic fracture led to necrotizing fasciitis (flesh-eating bacteria). This extraordinary limb salvage was nationally recognized as a groundbreaking achievement in sports medicine and trauma surgery.
Dr. Mehan also pioneered the first sternal nonunion surgery at Inova Fairfax and now leads the region’s only dedicated sternal and chest wall reconstruction program. With the largest published series in the world on rigid sternal fixation, he is widely considered a leading authority on reconstructive options for infected, unstable, or non-healing chest injuries.
In the realm of facial trauma and fractures, Dr. Mehan has treated thousands of cases over nearly two decades, including the successful facial reconstruction of MLB player Paul DeJong of the Washington Nationals in 2025—helping him return to play after a complex injury.
From replanting a toddler’s hand after a devastating meat grinder accident to rebuilding entire chest walls and salvaging limbs deemed unsalvageable, Dr. Mehan’s surgical scope is vast and precise. His calm leadership and technical mastery under pressure have earned him the trust of patients, peers, and national organizations alike.
What sets Dr. Mehan apart is not only what he does—but how he does it. Every innovation, every achievement, and every excellent outcome has been built without external institutional support—fueled entirely by hard work, perseverance, and a smile, while never compromising on patient care. Dominion Plastic Surgery has remained proudly independent, putting patients—not politics, red tape, or quotas—at the center of everything. This is what it means to truly practice medicine with purpose.
This same spirit informs Dr. Mehan’s approach to cosmetic surgery. With high-volume reconstructive training and years of experience sculpting complex anatomy, he delivers elegant, natural results to aesthetic patients who benefit from his surgical depth and aesthetic vision. While others advertise, his work speaks for itself—and his cosmetic practice continues to thrive purely by word of mouth and reputation.
Dr. Mehan completed one of the nation’s most competitive six-year BA/MD programs and trained at elite institutions including Albert Einstein Medical Center, Brown University, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Penn, and Pittsburgh. He currently serves as Director of Plastic Surgery Education for the INOVA Foot & Ankle Surgery Program and is an Assistant Professor of Medical Education at UVA’s INOVA campus.
He has been honored repeatedly as a Top Doctor in Washingtonian, Arlington Magazine, and Northern Virginia Magazine, and has received numerous Best Clinical Faculty awards—including from the Georgetown University Plastic Surgery Residency, the INOVA Foot & Ankle Surgery Program, and UVA Medical School. A national speaker and consultant for Smith & Nephew, Dr. Mehan is not only an active presenter but also leads cadaver teaching labs and flap reconstruction courses for surgeons across the country multiple times a year.
Dr. Mehan is deeply committed to quality—not only in his own work but across the field. He served as a manuscript peer reviewer for the prestigious journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, sat on the Surgical Quality Control Committee at INOVA from 2013 to 2022, and currently serves as an elected member of the 2025 Medical Executive Committee.
Beyond the OR, Dr. Mehan is a licensed private pilot with several years of flying experience and holds an active instrument rating. When not immersed in professional life, he is a proud father of four sons—his greatest joy and source of inspiration. He is also a successful entrepreneur and founder of multiple ventures, each reflecting his strategic vision and dedication to improving patient care.
He is the founder of Denovalaw, a Washington, D.C.–based law firm specializing in advocacy for surgeons. The firm focuses on contracts, reimbursement negotiations, and helping both in-network and out-of-network surgeons navigate today’s increasingly complex legal and regulatory landscape. Denovalaw has also taken legal action all the way to the Virginia Supreme Court against Blue Cross to help prevent balance billing to patients and hold insurance companies accountable for unfair practices and inadequate reimbursements to surgeons.
Dr. Mehan is also the visionary founder of the Hartland Surgery Center—the only center in Virginia owned by a private plastic surgeon to receive approval for a Certificate of Public Need (COPN). This hard-fought victory—spearheaded by Denovalaw (dba Glynnlaw)—faced strong opposition from entrenched healthcare institutions looking to preserve their monopoly on facility fees, but ultimately triumphed through persistence, legal expertise, and patient-centered advocacy.
In addition, Dr. Mehan founded MeHand Therapy, a dedicated hand therapy center designed to support patients in their recovery from upper extremity injuries and surgery—providing essential rehabilitation services that align closely with the surgical precision and quality of care that define Dominion Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Mehan is also a founding member of Symplast, a medical software (EMR) company still in operation today. He personally designed the original user interface and functionality, with the goal of creating a platform that was intuitive, elegant, and far easier to use than the clunky systems that dominated the market at the time.
Dr. Mehan is committed to giving back—locally and globally. He has completed two surgical mission trips to India and ensures that at least 10% of the work at Dominion Plastic Surgery is dedicated to caring for the uninsured, underinsured, and patients in financial need. To expand on this mission, Dr. Mehan has established a nonprofit organization called Healing Hands to serve surgical patients in Northern Virginia who have nowhere else to turn.
“It’s not just about being a plastic surgeon—it’s about being the surgeon who’s trusted when everything is on the line.”
