Additionally, Dr. Mehan has been privileged to travel to rural India for the last two years with a small group of fellow plastic surgeons in order to treat the medically underserved. Many of them burn victims from deliberate acts of cruelty known as “bride burnings”, these foreign doctors are the patient’s only hope. In January 2013 in just under 4 days on site at Apollo Hospital, the 6 surgeons were able to perform over 100 life-altering surgeries, allowing for not only a more “normal” appearance of their patients, but more importantly an increase in these individuals functional capabilities and, therefore, an increase in livelihood.
These extraordinarily humbling experiences are ones that Dr. Mehan wishes to continue annually by returning to India at the beginning of each year in the hopes that he may further contribute to helping to improve the lives of these individuals who have such poor access to care.
