Hand Surgery FAQs

When should I see a hand surgeon after an injury?
An evaluation may be appropriate when an injury causes significant pain, deformity, loss of movement, numbness, weakness, an open wound or concern for damage to deeper structures such as tendons, nerves or blood vessels.
I cut my finger and now it won't bend. What could that mean?
A deep cut can damage the tendon responsible for bending the finger. Because tendon injuries may require timely evaluation and repair, loss of normal finger movement after a laceration should be assessed by an appropriate medical professional.
Does every hand fracture require surgery?
No. Treatment depends on the location and stability of the fracture, alignment of the bone, joint involvement and how the injury affects hand function. Some fractures can be treated without surgery while others may require surgical stabilization.
Can damaged hand nerves be repaired?
Some nerve injuries can be treated surgically. The appropriate approach depends on the type, location and extent of nerve damage. DPS also provides dedicated peripheral nerve surgery for selected nerve injuries and compression conditions.
How long does recovery after hand surgery take?
