About

One of the unique types of surgery that we offer our patients here at Dominion Plastic Surgery is called facial reconstruction surgery. Typically, this type of surgery is required when there has been some facial trauma to the face such as facial fractures. So, what is facial reconstruction surgery and why is it so important? Let’s take a closer look.

Why Is Facial Reconstruction Surgery So Important?

Unlike Gumbi who didn’t have a bone in his body, all of the bones in the human body are important— especially the bones that make up the facial structure. The bones in the face aren’t there to give you your good looks. In fact, they are designed to protect the brain and the eyes and are also designed to help you chew and eat. When these bones are broken, it’s not just about putting them back together— it’s about putting them back correctly so that your facial structure functions like it’s supposed to.

How Is Facial Reconstruction Done?

The facial reconstruction process itself is largely dependent on the complexity of the injury. Here at Dominion Plastic Surgery, we perform surgery to help correct a variety of different facial fractures including:

  • Orbital Bone Fractures

  • Zygoma Fractures

  • Maxilla and Mandible Fractures

  • Frontal Bone and Frontal Sinus Fractures

  • Nasal Fractures

What Is Recovery Like?

Depending on the type of surgery we have to will dictate how complex of a recovery you can expect. Even those some patients have to have their wired shut while they heal, overall, recovery from facial reconstructive surgery is fairly quick. When you are sent home from recovery, we will send you home with a detailed list of care instructions. One of the biggest things to expect is that many patients who have jaw surgery will have to eat soft foods or even liquids.

If you have a facial fracture, let us make sure that your reconstruction is done properly. To learn more about facial reconstruction surgery, contact our Falls Church office at  (703) 544-8971.
