ALEX smith’s Surgery and comeback
Do you recognize this infamous sack? In November of 2018, Redskin’s quarterback Alex Smith sustained a traumatic injury to his right leg during a game against the Houston Texans. Alex was carted off the field during the third quarter after getting sacked by the Texans’ cornerback, Kareem Jackson, and defensive end, J.J. Watt.
He was diagnosed with an open fracture of the two bones in the shin, the tibia and the fibula. His injury is comparable to Joe Theismann’s infamous leg injury that occurred 33 years prior. Alex underwent emergency surgery to treat his fractures and unfortunately, he developed a life and limb-threatening infection afterward.
Dominion Plastic Surgery’s own Dr. Mehan, Dr. Johnson, and team along with orthopedists Dr. West, Dr. Malekzadeh, and Dr. Holtzman performed numerous operations to clear the infection and reconstruct Alex Smith’s leg. After months of rehabilitation, Alex Smith returned to the field, lead the Washington Redskin’s to the playoff and won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.

About traumatic reconstuction
Just a couple of decades ago, if a patient had a malignant tumor in an arm or a devastating trauma to a leg, it usually meant the limb would have to be amputated.
